FedEx Import and Export Surcharges Explained

At Interparcel, we strive to provide transparent pricing for your shipping needs. However, some additional charges may arise due to your particular circumstances. These include government-imposed fees or specific handling requirements.

To help you anticipate and minimise the risk of unexpected costs, we've outlined the most common surcharges below. Review these guidelines to better understand which fees might apply to your shipment.

Freight and Packaging-Related Surcharges

Accurate quoting and booking rely on entering the correct weight, dimensions, packaging type, and address. Below are common surcharges to consider:

  • Address Correction: An additional charge of $17 AUD per shipment applies for unsuccessful deliveries due to incorrect or incomplete addresses.
  • Additional Handling Charge: For all FedEx International services, a fee of $41.10 AUD applies to any package that meets any of the following criteria:
    • Packages with the longest side over 121cm or the second longest side over 76cm. or is more than 266cm in length and girth. If the Oversize Charge is applied to a package, the Additional Handling Surcharge - Dimension will not apply.
    • Packages weighing more than 31kg.
    • It's not fully encased in an outer shipping container.
    • Items not fully encased in corrugated cardboard (e.g., metal, wood, plastic).
    • It’s encased in an outer shipping container covered in shrink wrap or stretch wrap.
    • Cylindrical items (e.g., barrels, drums) not fully encased in cardboard.

FedEx has broken down the additional handling charge into three categories: Dimension, Weight and Packaging. If a package meets criteria for multiple Additional handling surcharges (Dimension, Weight and Packaging), only 1 with the highest charge applies.

FedEx reserves the right to assess additional handling charges for packages that require special handling or that require FedEx to apply additional packaging during transit.

  • Additional Handling Surcharge - Freight: For FedEx Freight Services, a surcharge of $270.80 AUD per Freight applies for pallets exceeding 157cm on its longest side.
  • Oversize Charge: A surcharge of $101.60 AUD is applicable to a package that exceeds 243cm in length, or 330cm in length and girth.
  • Non-Stackable Surcharge:A fee of $375.00 AUD per freight handling unit for International Freight services, is applicable for any skid, or pallet that cannot be stacked vertically in a safe and secure manner. Examples include, but are not limited to:
    1. Do not have a flat and stable top or base
    2. May be damaged if another piece is loaded on them, or
    3. have flat and stable loading surfaces but are too narrow to safely and securely support other freight handling units (e.g., 1-2 barrels or drums)
