Hi-Trans Surcharges Explained

Do you use Hi-Trans for your freight deliveries? If so, it's important to be aware of the various surcharges that might be applied in specific scenarios.

These surcharges are in place to cover additional handling or changes in delivery conditions. Read on for more information about each surcharge and how to avoid them.

Requirements for Road Express

1. Futile Fee

A futile fee will be charged if the freight is not ready at pickup, the premises are closed and/or unattended, or if delivery is rejected. Here's a breakdown:

  • 1 - 4 Pallets: $75 + GST and fuel
  • 5 - 10 Pallets: $110 + GST and fuel
  • 11+ Pallets: $225 + GST and fuel

Make sure your freight is ready and accessible at the agreed time to avoid this fee.

2. Wait Time Fee

A wait time charge can incur when the allocated loading or unloading time for your collection/delivery has exceeded. To minimise costs, ensure your team is ready to efficiently load or unload the freight upon arrival.

3. Hand Unload Fee

A Hand Unload Fee applies when a tail-lift service is not selected, and there are accessibility issues to the premises—such as when the driver cannot enter and must unload at the roadside.

The fee is $45.00 plus GST per pallet. To avoid this fee, consider selecting the tail-lift service when booking, especially if there may be accessibility challenges.

4. Tailgate Fee

The Tailgate Fee will apply if a customer hasn't selected a tail-lift service, and the sender or receiver does not have a forklift or material handling equipment (MHE) to load or unload the freight.

The cost is determined by the difference between the tail-lift and non-tail-lift service, plus the difference in any additional freight charges. To prevent unexpected costs, it is advisable to select the appropriate loading and unloading options in advance.

5. Timeslot Fee

The Timeslot Fee is applied when the receiver defers the initial estimated delivery time and requests a specific day and time for delivery. This fee is $20.00 plus GST. To avoid this cost, coordinate with the receiver to ensure they are available at the originally scheduled delivery time.

Additional Freight Surcharges

Misdeclaration Surcharge

This surcharge applies when the declared weight, dimensions, or other shipment details are inaccurate. Couriers rely on accurate information to calculate shipping costs, and discrepancies may result in additional fees.

How to avoid this surcharge:

  • Accurately measure and weigh each parcel or pallet (length, width, height, and weight).
  • Ensure proper packaging and avoid misleading labels like “Handle With Care” or “This Way Up.”
  • Refer to our Packing Guide for helpful tips.

Address Error Surcharge

This charge is applied when details such as the suburb, postcode, or state are incorrect. These errors can lead to delivery delays or the need for rerouting, which incurs extra costs.

How to avoid this surcharge:

  • Double-check the suburb, postcode, and state before booking.
  • Verify that the delivery address aligns with the recipient's location.

Incorrect Service Surcharge

This applies when the selected service doesn’t align with the parcel's actual specifications or delivery requirements.

For instance, selecting a service intended for smaller parcels but sending a larger or heavier shipment may result in additional fees.

How to avoid this surcharge:

  • Review service descriptions and carrier guidelines carefully to select the appropriate option for your delivery.
  • Be aware of services such as ATL (Authority to Leave), where the courier will leave the parcel in a safe location at the delivery address. Please note that our transit warranty does not apply for ATL deliveries.
  • Confirm if your shipment is going to a residential or business address, as some services vary based on destination type:
    • B2B (Business-to-Business): Services designed for deliveries to commercial locations, such as storefronts, warehouses, or business premises. These do not include businesses operated from homes or private residences.
    • B2C (Business-to-Consumer): Services for deliveries to residential addresses or homes where a business is operated.
