Do you remember filling out your Census form at home on August 8?
Well, that data has been released for the public to peruse.
There are a lot of trends and insights that are worth taking note of. Thankfully, someone else has done all the hard work and broken down the vital data so you can know your customer of the future and prepare your business.
Australia Post recently hosted an event titled Who is Australia Now? Mark McCrindle of McCrindle Advisory shared his insights and predictions based on the Census data. Here’s what you need to know.
You Can Expect More Customers
Have you noticed an increase in customers? One of the possible reasons for this is the growth in population. Australia is now home to 26 million people, which is two million more than five years ago. It’s the largest growth in this time period in the history of the country.
It’s worth noting that where the population is living is also changing. Queensland saw the largest growth rate, and one in three Australians live outside of a capital city. According to a survey from McCrindle Advisory, 60% of respondents are considering moving to regional areas. So you may want to ensure you have access to a multicarrier solution that features courier companies that can deliver parcels anywhere in the country.
The New Generation
Generation Y, also known as Millenials, are about to overtake Baby Boomers as the largest generational group in Australia. These individuals also make up the majority share of the workforce. However, the customer you will want to start preparing for is Generation Alpha.
This group has not made it to the workforce, but they already hold significant economic influence. The McCrindle Advisory survey found that 80% of parents with Generation Alpha students have taken action or made decisions influenced by them. They can help drive social media channels, brands and pop culture. It can be worth planning your content strategy for this audience.
A Digital Future
As generations continue to shift, you can also expect further digital integrations. Gen Z and Alpha will use it seamlessly as they have been exposed to technology differently than prior generations. To know your customer, you’ll need to adapt to the way they interact with their screens.
For example, research shows that younger generations use YouTube as their primary search engine. They don’t want to read the answer to their question. They want to see it. It’s one of the reasons for the popularity of short-form videos like TikTok. You can also expect these generations to speak to their technology more to learn the answers.
The Future of Work
The final trend identified referred to the workforce. The assumption is that future employees will want a hybrid solution. They want to work from home when they need flexible hours, work-life balance, and deep thinking. But they’ll want to travel to the office to collaborate and build relationships with colleagues and leaders.
One of the most interesting insights on how they choose employers can also relate to how they shop with brands. Future generations will choose businesses that:
- Have purpose
- Align with their values
- Demonstrate strong social connections
- Produce positive impacts on the world around them
